Martin Truex Jr. holds off Kyle Busch to claim fourth win of the season
Posted: June 23, 2019

Martin Truex Jr. gave Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota their 10th win in 16 races this season after dominating the final stage of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. The final 50 laps were a battle for the lead between teammates, Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch. Busch was able to cut an eight-second lead down to under a second, but he did not have enough to contend for a pass due to the tires being overworked and losing traction. This was Truex Jr.’s fourth win of the 2019 season. He is now even with Busch for the most wins so far this season. Ryan Blaney picked up his first top-five finish of the season since Bristol.

The Tragedy of the Phoenix Suns
Posted: June 21, 2019

The warning signs were there. Greta Rogers told us all and we took her rant to the Phoenix City Council as a joke. The Phoenix Suns are an absolute disaster and the franchise is nearing a complete loss following last night’s NBA Draft. When a 90-year old has the best outlook on an entertainment enterprise that has not been entertaining for nearly a decade, that is a serious problem. Going into the draft, the Suns were in position to land a guard such as Coby White or a wing such as Jarrett Culver to help take some of the burdens off of Devin Booker, who must have a sore back from keeping Phoenix basketball relevant. Instead of getting help for Booker, Phoenix traded one of their best scorers in TJ Warren to the Indiana Pacers to clear up cap space and they traded the number six pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 11th pick and Dario Saric. Minnesota ends up selecting Jarrett Culver at six, thus meaning the Suns traded Jarrett Culver. I can’t tell you the route that Phoenix wants to go in. They are wasting away Booker’s prime by not making the necessary moves to be in a rebuilding process. The franchise has stagnated. Even the people of Phoenix hate seeing this franchise and they, for sure, do not want to finance a new arena for subpar entertainment. However, it may not be all doom and gloom yet for the Suns.

Lakers Throw Future of Franchise Away for Short-Term Prayer
Posted: June 16, 2019

David Griffin, you are a genius. The Los Angeles Lakers handed the New Orleans Pelicans three talented, young players and the fourth pick in this year’s draft in exchange for an injury-prone center in Anthony Davis. Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Zion Williamson, and trade value for a top-five draft pick are headed to the “Big Easy” and will be playing for the Pelicans this October. All three of these players that the Lakers sent to New Orleans have high ceilings and were contributing when the Lakers looked like a playoff contender early last season. Injuries came about that shut down Ingram and Lonzo for the season but when they are healthy, both of these men are franchise-altering talents. The additions of Zion Williamson and trade value for the fourth pick add another piece to the puzzle to rebuild the Pelican franchise. Julius Randle and Jrue Holiday become the leaders of this very young team that have set themselves up to be a better playoff contender than the Lakers, barring injuries or poor performance. If the talent on this New Orleans’ franchise can overcome the inexperience and develop chemistry where they all live up to their potential, then the Pelicans win the trade and have a better chance of making the postseason than their trade counterparts.

From David to Goliath, the St. Louis Blues Hoist Their First-Ever Stanley Cup
Posted: June 13, 2019

An electric atmosphere set the tone for Game 7 following a rousing rendition of the national anthem from Todd Angilly and the Boston Bruins matched that energy to start this one. The Bruins came out firing on all cylinders early in the first period. They were getting pucks on net and even got an early power play that sent Colton Parayko to the box. Shot after shot, nothing was getting by rookie goaltender, Jordan Binnington. Binnington held down the fort for the St. Louis Blues the entire period and were able to get a huge penalty kill, which turned into two late goals from Ryan O’Reilly and Alex Pietrangelo. O’Reilly’s goal came from a great fore-check and led to shot on the point from Jay Bowumeester that deflected off of O’Reilly’s stick and past Tuukka Rask. With seconds left in the opening period, Jaden Schwartz was able to get by poor defending from Brad Marchand, leading to a great pass to Alex Pietrangelo and a back-handed wrist shot by Rask to make it 2-0 Blues right before intermission. Boston outshot St. Louis 12 to 4 in the first period with nothing to show for it.

Raptors Win First Title, End Warrior Dynasty & Launch New Era for NBA
Posted: June 13, 2019

No. The headline you are reading is not from an NBA 2K video game. The Toronto Raptors are the 2019 NBA Champions. After multiple playoff runs only to come up short against LeBron James, Kyle Lowry gets to call himself an NBA Champion. Toronto knew that when they signed Kawhi Leonard, it would only be for a single season. Through all the turmoil and the ugly breakup that Kawhi had with the San Antonio Spurs, Kawhi was able to turn a franchise, notorious for failing, into the team that ends the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty.

Joey Logano Conducts Train in Dominant Win at Michigan
Posted: June 12, 2019

I cannot recall a race ever running a Monday night, but it happened with the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The race was originally scheduled to run on Sunday afternoon until rain forced NASCAR to postpone the race to Monday evening due to Fox Sports' broadcast of the FIFA Women's World Cup. Due to cool temperatures outside and on the track surface, many fans and media members expected the race to be as thrilling and as closely contested as the Kansas and Charlotte night races. Unfortunately, while the race was closely contested in terms of distances between the leader and the rest of the field, nobody was able to pass the leader during the race and once Joey Logano was able to get back in the lead thanks to having the fastest car and pit strategy, he was able to hold the lead with the clean air advantage.

The Sunday Before Memorial Day is the Best Day in Sports
Posted: May 25, 2019

As Sunday grows closer, I have been giving a lot of thought to just how special the day before Memorial Day is. It is unlike anything in sports. It is an opportunity to give the spotlight to events that are almost always overlooked by Americans, and that is the day when the top three divisions in all of motorsports hold their crown jewel races. Formula One has the Monaco Grand Prix, IndyCar has the Indianapolis 500, and NASCAR has the Coca-Cola 600. They all take place on this special day. Nearly 15 hours of exciting racing from the morning until the evening and here are the reasons why each race is special and should be watched across the country.
