Rep. Ruben Gallego said Monday he won't run for the U.S. Senate, likely avoiding a contentious fight for the Democratic nomination to finish John McCain's last term. Gallego is well-connected to the liberal base of the Democratic Party, and many activists hoped the Phoenix Democrat would provide an option to the left of Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut who has run a centrist campaign since he jumped into the race last month. But Gallego said he doesn't want to engage in a bitter primary before pivoting to the general election for a seat that's crucial for Democrats eyeing the Senate majority.

Federal authorities say a former Maryland gang member serving a life prison sentence in southern Arizona has died after having a medical emergency. A spokesman for the U.S. Penitentiary in Tucson says 36-year-old Shelton Harris was taken to a hospital Sunday and pronounced dead. The cause of death is unclear. Harris had been at the federal prison since February 2016. Authorities say he was serving life in prison plus 60 years for murder, conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute drugs, possession of a firearm, and witness retaliation.

Buckeye police have arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of making school-shooting threats on social media. Police said in a news release Monday the unidentified teen has been booked into Durango Juvenile Detention Facility in Phoenix, just east of Buckeye. According to investigators, he posted on Sunday a Snapchat image of someone holding a firearm. It was accompanied with a message threatening to shoot people at Youngker High School the next day. The threat was shared several times, leading to calls to authorities. Police say they were able to identify the suspect, who is a student at Youngker and admitted to making the Snapchat post.
