Flagstaff, AZ- One of the toughest challenges in all of sports is to win a championship. One challenge however that is even greater is to win a championship the year after winning one. Winslow High School, who won the 3A state championship last season, is facing this extra-daunting challenge this year. After their first game, it appears they are ready to face this challenge.

Winslow High upset the larger 4A Flagstaff High School 63-47 on the road and did so with an emphatic second half performance. After leading 25-24 at the half, Winslow went on a 28-10 run in the 3rd quarter and 38-23 in the second half to pull away for a convincing 63-47 win to start off their 2018-19 campaign 1-0.

They were led by junior Zachary Wagner, who had 24 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, and senior Darius James who had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. These two players dominated in the paint and led a stellar transition offense that overwhelmed the Eagles defense. Despite the altitude, the Bulldogs felt right at home as they flew up and down the court against a gassed Eagles defense. Winslow will look to continue the momentum as they take one on the Page Sand Devils on Tuesday November 27.

Flagstaff, who went 13-14 last season, looked to start off strong at home, but were outrun by the quick but efficient transition game of Winslow. Despite a strong performance from senior Troy Yazzie, they suffered a tough home opening loss. They will look to rebound as they take on the Moon Valley Rockets on Tuesday November 27.
