Lakers Throw Future of Franchise Away for Short-Term Prayer
Posted: June 16, 2019

David Griffin, you are a genius. The Los Angeles Lakers handed the New Orleans Pelicans three talented, young players and the fourth pick in this year’s draft in exchange for an injury-prone center in Anthony Davis. Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Zion Williamson, and trade value for a top-five draft pick are headed to the “Big Easy” and will be playing for the Pelicans this October. All three of these players that the Lakers sent to New Orleans have high ceilings and were contributing when the Lakers looked like a playoff contender early last season. Injuries came about that shut down Ingram and Lonzo for the season but when they are healthy, both of these men are franchise-altering talents. The additions of Zion Williamson and trade value for the fourth pick add another piece to the puzzle to rebuild the Pelican franchise. Julius Randle and Jrue Holiday become the leaders of this very young team that have set themselves up to be a better playoff contender than the Lakers, barring injuries or poor performance. If the talent on this New Orleans’ franchise can overcome the inexperience and develop chemistry where they all live up to their potential, then the Pelicans win the trade and have a better chance of making the postseason than their trade counterparts.

One shop in particular, the Shiprock Trading Post, used to specialize in a variety of goods for members of the Navajo Tribe living in the area, but has had to change its approach to upscale Navajo Crafts in order to remain viable. While the owner of one trading post, Tom Wheeler, says they do still have some demand from travelers, he questions whether they will remain so in the future.

From David to Goliath, the St. Louis Blues Hoist Their First-Ever Stanley Cup
Posted: June 13, 2019

An electric atmosphere set the tone for Game 7 following a rousing rendition of the national anthem from Todd Angilly and the Boston Bruins matched that energy to start this one. The Bruins came out firing on all cylinders early in the first period. They were getting pucks on net and even got an early power play that sent Colton Parayko to the box. Shot after shot, nothing was getting by rookie goaltender, Jordan Binnington. Binnington held down the fort for the St. Louis Blues the entire period and were able to get a huge penalty kill, which turned into two late goals from Ryan O’Reilly and Alex Pietrangelo. O’Reilly’s goal came from a great fore-check and led to shot on the point from Jay Bowumeester that deflected off of O’Reilly’s stick and past Tuukka Rask. With seconds left in the opening period, Jaden Schwartz was able to get by poor defending from Brad Marchand, leading to a great pass to Alex Pietrangelo and a back-handed wrist shot by Rask to make it 2-0 Blues right before intermission. Boston outshot St. Louis 12 to 4 in the first period with nothing to show for it.

Raptors Win First Title, End Warrior Dynasty & Launch New Era for NBA

No. The headline you are reading is not from an NBA 2K video game. The Toronto Raptors are the 2019 NBA Champions. After multiple playoff runs only to come up short against LeBron James, Kyle Lowry gets to call himself an NBA Champion. Toronto knew that when they signed Kawhi Leonard, it would only be for a single season. Through all the turmoil and the ugly breakup that Kawhi had with the San Antonio Spurs, Kawhi was able to turn a franchise, notorious for failing, into the team that ends the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty.

News briefing for June 5, 2019
Updated: June 13, 2019 - 2:01 pm

The reopening of forests in the Flagstaff area is being delayed as a result of weather issues and a logging project involving helicopters. The Coconino National Forest has been closed since January so an effort to reduce wildfire risks through forest thinning could be conducted. While the forests were scheduled to reopen this past Friday, recent wind conditions proved problematic in the use of helicopters to haul away felled trees. A spokesman for the forest services, George Jozens, has stated that all of Mount Elden will be open at the end of June, though it is possible that some sections will open at an earlier time.

When it comes to sports at NAU (Northern Arizona University), people tend to think of the football team, the track and field program, or the soccer programs. However, NAU offers more than just those sports to their students and to the City of Flagstaff, but when it comes to which sports are the most popular or have the biggest fanbase, there is one NAU sports team that does not get the recognition that many think they deserve. That team is Men's Lacrosse.
